Monument Timeline and Inscription
1615
Monument presumably erected on the death of Lady Mary Wriothesley, 5 January 1615.
1717 Early Description
Pavey, William, Topographical Notes relating to many places in the Isle of Wight, and Hampshire, with sketches of the churches, monuments, inscriptions, etc., taken or transcribed in the year 1719. British Library, Additional MS 142296, ff. 20-7.
f.23 (bottom) Against the south wall is a beautiful mural monument of curious black marble with the figure of a small child finely dressed lying at length in white marble, angels with other neat ornaments in white marble; the head lies to the east.
This inscription under/:
Heere lyeth buryed ye Bodye of ye Lady Marye Wriot:
-heslye fourth Daughter daughter of ye Right honorable Henrye
Earle of Southampton & ye Ladye Elizabeth his
Wife who dyed ya 5th of Januarye 1615 Being of
ye Age of 4 years & 4 monthes/
1840. Mid-19th-century watercolour painting with a description of the Lady Mary Monument on the reverse.

[Transcription*] The figures are much defaced, and only one hand remains, which appears to have held a palm branch. The figure above the monument probably held a trumpet. The figures of the Angels measure 25 inches in height. The artist has added five more letters in the first line (ESLYE) than there ought to be, as they are carried on to the second line in the original.
[In another hand in margin, date unknown]
These flanking figures are now gone altogether. The work is exquisite, most certainly by Epiphanius Evesham.
1909 - Recorded Restoration
The Lady Mary Monument was restored in 1909 by the Duke of Portland and Lord Montagu of Beaulieu.
1984 - Recorded Restoration
Another conservation effort was carried out in 1984 by the Chichester Cathedral Builders.
