Document Specific Information
Title(s): Detailed Architect's Drawings of the Southampton Monument (to scale), 1903
Description: The four architect’s drawings of the Southampton Monument were produced by Alexander Sinclair Wemyes Mackay for Louis Ambler, of London. Printed on the drawings are the words “measured and drawn by” A.S.W. Mackay (handwritten signature). The drawings also have imprinted on them: “c. A.D. 1585” which appears to be an incorrect presumed date for the erection of the Wriothesley tomb.
Ambler was the architect of St. Winifred's Church (1913-16), Langwith Lodge (1904), and other Estate buildings, all for 6th Duke of Portland, (1904-16) and was hired to supervise the 1905 restoration of the Southampton Monument.
Repository: The four drawings were published in The Architectural Association Sketch Book Third Series, Vol. VII, 1903, edited by William G.B. Lewis & William A. Pite.
